Workshop – How Trauma Shows up in the Body: Understanding Somatic Approaches

As trauma is stored in the body, incorporating understanding of the body is an essential part of trauma work. This workshop will provide information on incorporating somatic practice in counselling and crisis intervention, including strategies for children, adolescents, and adults. It will also include the evolution of our acute stress response, an overview of the brain, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and practical somatic interventions.
Speaker: Monika Penner is a Registered Provisional Psychologist practicing in Edmonton, Alberta. She has 20 years experience counselling children, adolescents, adults, and families, with a special interest in attachment, using the body to regulate and heal, and complex trauma. Monika incorporates somatic interventions into her teaching at City University, and her counselling with clients who experience trauma, anxiety, depression other concerns.
Intended Audience: Front line workers and counsellors.
