Social participation and a sense of connection are important for positive mental health and healthy aging.
Wise & Well: Building Mental Fitness for Older Adults is an 18-month project aiming to reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness among older adults in the central Okanagan. There are two key elements to this project: 1) to equip volunteers with the skills and knowledge they need to support older adults; 2) to match volunteers with older adults who may be vulnerable to mental health concerns.
CMHA Kelowna is working with several community partners to deliver Wise & Well. Volunteers, including a team of UBC Okanagan Master of Social Work students, will be provided with mental health training, including courses such as Mental Health First Aid, Mental Fitness, ASIST, and/or safeTALK.
