Tips for Holiday Peace of Mind and Coping with Holiday Grief

The holiday season is meant to be a time of joy, celebration and for spending time with those we love. However, the festivities come with high expectations of perfection that many of us struggle to live up to. Many people experience feelings of isolation, financial strain or increased family conflict that can make this a very stressful time of year. And it’s even harder for those of us with poor mental health.

CMHA suggests that some of the best ways to deal with added stress around the holiday season are common sense strategies. The key is to keep things simple, focus on what is important to you and, most importantly, remember to make your mental health a priority. [Read more…]

Safeguard Your Mental Health in Wildfire Season

Being forced from one’s home by a natural disaster is a rare occurrence that most of us will never face. However, tens of thousands of British Columbians are going through this upheaval right now as hundreds of wildfires burn throughout the province. Mental health experts warn that the emotional toll of disaster can be as devastating as the financial strains of damage and loss of home, business or personal property.

“Natural disasters can be extremely traumatic and overwhelming for people. While most people will get through these hard times, for others it may be very hard to cope and the disaster can spark a bigger ongoing mental health problem,” says Bev Gutray, CEO of the CMHA’s BC Division. “After you safeguard your physical health and that of other people and pets, it’s important to take care of your mental health as well.” [Read more…]

Interior Savings and CMHA Kelowna Creating a Mentally Healthy Community One Member at a Time

Interior Savings and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna (CMHA Kelowna) have partnered to provide mental wellness education and training to Interior Savings’ employees and members.

“We know that even positive changes in someone’s life, such as retirement, marriage, purchasing a home, or having a baby, can all contribute to stress, financially and otherwise, for individuals and families if they do not have support,” says Kathy Conway, CEO of Interior Savings. “We want to be able to ease the financial stress for our members through the services and advice we offer, but also help connect them to other community resources such as CMHA Kelowna.” [Read more…]
