Discovery College: Building Healthy Boundaries

Did you know having healthy boundaries helps reduce stress and improve wellness? Are you interested in taking time to learn more, explore which boundaries are important for you and practice some techniques to set and maintain boundaries? Register for the Discovery College pilot course on Building Healthy Boundaries. We know you may be busy, so we designed a streamlined course that discusses key topics including understanding boundaries and boundary-setting techniques; personal and relational boundaries; overcoming boundary challenges; and assertive communication.
Building Healthy Boundaries is a 4-session course that will run from 9:00-10:30am on Wednesday August 21st, 28th, September 4th and 11th at the Kelowna Community Health Centre, 505 Doyle Avenue. Participants must be available for all 4 sessions.

Target Audience: This course is for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of what boundaries are, why they are so important to your personal well-being and how to set them in your life.
Course Format: The curriculum duration is 6 hours (4 x 1.5 hour modules). It is designed and delivered by co-facilitators with professional and lived experience who aim to offer a safe place to get together with people who may have similar experiences or goals, to provide information and inspiration through education, shared stories, resources and practical skills.
Overview: This course helps students identify and evaluate their own personal boundaries; learn boundary-setting techniques and practice them in a safe and supportive setting.
On completion of this course students will be able to
- Define boundaries and describe the ways in which boundaries preserve and protect personal values;
- Identify different types of boundaries;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of their current boundaries;
- Understand and apply boundary setting techniques;
- Practice methods to overcome challenges to setting boundaries;
- Apply assertive communication strategies;
- Enhance or create new boundaries.

|Module 1: Introduction to Building Healthy Boundaries||Module 1 will look at what boundaries are and how they can help positively benefit relationships and individual wellness. The section also touches on why boundaries are important and how we as individuals can go about setting them.||Understand the definition and concepts of boundaries
Identify and evaluate your personal values to guide your boundary-setting choices
Learn the WIN boundary setting technique
|Module 2: Personal & Relational Boundaries||Module 2 will look at what boundaries are and how they can help positively benefit individual wellness and relationships. By understanding and evaluating different types of boundaries we can begin to better define our own boundaries as well as recognize boundaries of others.
|Identify and evaluate your rights
Understand different boundary types and when to safely apply them
Identify and evaluate your personal boundaries
Practice self-awareness and noticing
Practice critical thinking skills
|Module 3: Overcoming Boundary Challenges||Module 3 will look at what boundary challenges exist in our lives. Knowing why boundaries are sometimes difficult to set and employing different techniques to help overcome these obstacles can ultimately lead to better, healthier relationships and interactions with others.
|Practice gentle refusal and other assertive techniques
Identify what gets in the way of boundary setting
Enhance skills for raising difficult issues (giving negative feedback and handling criticism)
Practice strategies for overcoming boundary challenges
|Module 4: Assertive communication||Module 4 will look at assertive communication as a core skill to enhance boundary setting.
|Understand assertiveness definition, guidelines, pitfalls and benefits
Develop assertive responses
Learn to express yourself in an assertive and respectful manner
Course Materials: Materials to be supplied by CMHA Discovery College.
Parking: No free or validated parking is available. Students are responsible to arrange their own transportation and parking. Paid parking is available at the Library Plaza Parkade at 1360 Ellis street.
What to Bring and what to Expect: Please dress comfortably. Discovery College courses are structured as a group course so there will be other students taking the course with you as well as the two course facilitators.
