Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience — who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over 1,000,000 people have taken the workshop, and studies have proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk.

For Sports Groups
Mental health awareness in the world of sport is gaining traction. Recent NHL suicides, along with stories from sports celebrities such as Canadian Clara Hughes and American Amanda Beard demonstrate the importance of discussing these issues. In one study, 17% of athletes had either generalized anxiety or an eating disorder. The need is great for coaches, parents and athletes to be familiar with mental wellness in sport. CMHA’s Mental Core program offers:
- Presentations for coaches and parents
- Help navigate the mental health system
- Events and forums for education about mental health
- Literature resource from articles, websites and reading recommendations
CMHA Kelowna is also proud to be part of the province-wide #TalkToday initiative.
