Opening up the Conversation on Men’s Mental Health
Men’s mental health is typically a conversation that traditionally doesn’t have as open of a dialog. Jessica points out, to open the podcast,
“Four-thousand suicides, that take place in Canada each year… 75% of those are men. A rate three-times higher than women.”
The need for open conversation among men, and their mental health, continues to be of significant importance around the world.
The Link Between Men’s Mental Health& Substance Use
The conversation reveals a troubling link between mental health struggles and substance use, as Mike explains, “When we look at the data from 2023 around where people are dying of unregulated drugs, 80% happens indoors. 47% of that is in people's homes. Certainly, when we consider 77% of men and dying at home alone that tome speaks to something as well.”
Episode four also highlights another substance that is all too common amongst males battling mental health issues, “One of the ways that mental health challenges show up in males is increased use of alcohol.”
Self-medication often obscures deeper issues, making it vital to address the root causes of these challenges rather than just the symptom, “Substance use is still absolutely the most stigmatized area.”
While discussions about mental health have progressed, the stigma around substance use continues to deter many men from seeking help. Creating safe spaces for men to share their experiences is crucial for dismantling this stigma.
Need for Support
The discussion continues to the importance of recognizing signs of distress in ourselves and others. Changes in behavior, increased irritability, and low energy can all indicate a need for support.

Small gestures like these can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
Addressing Men’s Mental Health: Steps Forward
Community plays a vital role in fostering mental wellness, as Mike notes, “There has to be awareness, there has to be conversation.”
Organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna, and as Mike describes “Heads Up Guys,” and Jessica points out, “He Changed It,” amongst other resources, are pivotal in promoting these discussions and encouraging men to engage openly. By creating a community where men feel comfortable discussing their struggles, we can change perceptions around mental health.
Also, by normalizing conversations about men’s mental health, we empower individuals to seek the help and support they need. Join us in continuing this essential dialogue to break down barriers and promote a mentally healthier society for everyone.
