From Homeless to Housed in Under a Month

“One Kelowna man has gone from sleeping on a doorstep to having a place of his own in four weeks thanks to a new homelessness plan.

He is the first success story of CMHA Kelowna’s Housing First initiative, which started in April and moved forward in June when Housing First founder, New Yorker Sam Tsemberis, visited CMHA staff to put on a training session.

CMHA’s Mike Gawliuk said they soon decided on their first Housing First recipient, a man who had been sleeping in a gazebo outside the CMHA office at 504 Sutherland Ave.”

Housing First is Coming to Kelowna

The issue of homelessness in Kelowna has come to the forefront of discussion and media coverage. On a weekly, if not daily basis, there are articles written and opinions shared about the urgency and visibility of the situation.

Homelessness is just as complex as people are unique; complex issues require complex solutions. Of those living without a home, affordability of housing was listed as the No. 1 area of concern. The other most commonly cited reasons for housing vulnerability include mental health issues, problematic substance use, physical health issues and disabilities, trauma, and family conflict.
