Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund grant supports a mobile mental health unit for youth

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna is pleased to receive a $15,000 grant from the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund to support a youth mental health mobile unit in the Kelowna area.

CMHA Kelowna, the operator and lead agency for Foundry Kelowna, is working to provide better access to mental health services for youth who live in the Central Okanagan.

Both CMHA Kelowna and Foundry Kelowna are amongst the 8 outstanding organizations featured in the Bell Let’s Talk Day 2020 campaign, which highlights Canadian organizations taking action by providing supports and services to make a difference for people experiencing mental health challenges.

Youth, families seeking wrap around services at Foundry Kelowna

Integrated youth centre marks one year in the community

The barriers between youth and the wellness they want to achieve are being dismantled – one visit at a time. This week marks a full year since Foundry Kelowna opened its doors and in that time more than 1,500 youth have come looking for help.

Foundry Kelowna is a centre that works with youth aged 12 – 24 to get the help they need. “There are 25 partner agencies working together, as seamlessly as we can, to reduce the burden young people can feel when they are looking for help,” explains Foundry Kelowna Manager, Melissa Feddersen.  “When a youth walks through our doors it’s a safe and welcoming environment where they only have to tell their story once. That means getting help is less traumatic and less frustrating.”  The integrated care model at Foundry Kelowna also means less wait times because the onsite partner agencies can connect youth to counsellors, physicians, income assistance, housing, and employment services.

Managing back to school anxiety in young children

Returning to school after summer vacation can be an exciting time for kids, but it can also be stressful for them and their parents. The start of school may be especially challenging for kids who are starting at kindergarten or a new school.

Some anxiety is a normal response and most kids experience mild back-to-school uneasiness that gradually fades once they meet their teacher and settle in to class.

Here are tips for helping nervous kids prepare a new school year and enjoy a successful and smooth transition back to school.
